Modern tyres include tread wear indicators, and as the tyre is used and the rubber wears out, the tyre should be replaced when the level of the tread is the same as the indicator. If you notice damage on the wall or tread of the tyre, or if the car loses grip on the road, it might be time to think about replacing the tyre(s).
